The Green Card, also known as a “tarjeta verde” in Spanish, is a document that grants permanent residence to a foreigner in the United States. With a Green Card, the holder can live, work, and study in the country indefinitely.

If you are a resident or American citizen, you can assist a family member in obtaining a Green Card. In this article, we explain how to do it.

  • Be a U.S. citizen or legal permanent resident.
  • Have a good immigration record.
  • Demonstrate that you can financially support your family member.

How to apply for the Green Card:

The process of applying for a Green Card for a family member is divided into two parts:

  1. Petition for Alien Relative (I-130): In this phase, the sponsor submits a petition to the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS).
  2. Application for Permanent Residence or Adjustment of Status (I-485): In this phase, the immigrant family member submits an application to the USCIS.
